Frequently Asked Questions
Which states have no sales tax?
As of 2024, five states have no state sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Note that Alaska and Montana allow local jurisdictions to impose their own sales taxes.
How do I calculate the pre-tax price from the total I paid?
Divide the total price by (1 + tax rate). For example, if you paid $107 and the tax rate is 7%, the pre-tax price is $107 / 1.07 = $100. Use the 'Post-tax (reverse)' mode in this calculator to do this automatically.
What state has the highest sales tax?
California has the highest state base sales tax rate at 7.25%. However, when combined with local taxes, some areas of Louisiana, Tennessee, and Arkansas can have combined rates exceeding 10%.
